He smiled, exhausted. He stepped up to me, and his tired eyes closed. "I don't want you to go," he whispered and pressed his lips to mine. Just briefly, chastely, sweetly.

I smiled at him. He smirked, almost shyly. It was cute. "You want coffee?" he asked.

I nodded, "Mmm." And he walked slowly out the door toward the staff lunch room.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and checked the time.

It was six AM. Fuck. We were down to four hours.

4:00

I sat my ass down in the chair across from Cameron's desk and scrolled through my

contacts. I knew it was early, but I also knew she'd be awake.

Her chipper greeting was met by my tired, dreary voice. "Morning, Rachel."

"What can I get for you? Do you need me to organize anything?" she asked me, no nonsense, no small talk. Thank God.

"Al, I need you to swing past my place. Grab me a suit, shirt, tie, shoes."

"No problem," she answered.

"Oh, and Rach?"

"Yes? Is there something else?"

"Yes." I grinned into the phone. "I need you to do me a favor."

CHAPTER 12 - I am... out of time.

01:30

The next thing I knew, someone was shaking my leg and my fucking neck was killing

me. My head lolled forward with a stabbing kink and my eyes opened.

Rachel.

"Come on," she said brightly. "It's time."

I fucking hate brightly.

I fucking hate cheery.

I noticed then, behind Rachel, was Simona, standing in front of a barely-awake

Cameron.

He was in the chair next to me. We must have fallen asleep.

I jumped to my feet. "Shit. What time is it?"

Rachel laughed at me, so I sneered at her. I might have growled. Yes, it was rude.

Yes, it was uncalled for.

I had issues about being woken up, okay? Don't act surprised. You saw how well it

worked out when I was woken up by my phone yesterday at Cameron's.

Waking me up never worked out well, not for anyone involved. Just ask my Momma.

She spent my entire teenage years putting up with my hate-to-be-woken, rip-your-

fucking-head-off ass.

"Don't try that shit with me, Lucas," Rachel stated with one hand on her hip. "It's 8:30. You have 90 minutes before your meeting."

I huffed. She was only tiny, this woman, but she sure kept me in line. "You sound like my Momma."

Rachel gave me one raised eyebrow, and Cameron chuckled. I glared at him and

grumbled, "Don't you start."

Then he huffed out a laughed. Yeah, it was real funny, asshole.

I pointed my finger at him and opened my mouth to tell him he could stop fucking

smiling, when someone cleared their throat. My head turned at the sound, and I winced and groan at the shooting pain in my neck.

Mr. Fletcher.

"You boys look like Hell," he said. He looked at the girls, "Rachel, Simona, they need coffee, please. Strong, black. And some Tylenol for Lucas."

The girls nodded and disappeared, and I rubbed my neck. Mr. Fletcher smiled.

"Falling asleep in these chairs will do little good for your neck."

"Mmm," I moaned my agreement. I tried to remember what happened -- why I fell asleep.
